The Heresy of Salvation: A Parable

Lightening crashes. The day is heavy. I remember the past. I don’t know about the future. I just write.

The answers have died. The questions are all that is left.

Violence exploded. They just wanted to find a safe place. Running from block to block, they were desperate for something open. After they’d all but given up hope of finding such a place, they saw a church. Running across the street, they banged on the door…a woman welcomed them in. They were finally safe. Cookies and punch filled the room. They got lost in the safety of it all. Finally, they were invited into a worship service. Needing a word of hope, they made their way down front. As the preacher mad his way to the pulpit, he smiled at them and said that he was especially glad they were there. It wasn’t long before they knew why he singled them out. “The rioting taking place in our streets is tragic. Racism and violence have no place in a civil society. We could stay in the darkness of it all…but I don’t want to…and I bet you don’t either. There is hope. There is an answer to all that ails us…and his name is Jesus. If we could just get everyone saved…there would be no more racism…there would be no violence.” They knew they were no longer safe. They got up to leave. Just as they were about to open the door, the preacher pressed, “Where are y’all going?” They turned around and declared, “To get saved.”

Amen.
