Silence.

Mexican national Edgar Tamayo decided to remain silent during his execution. After looking back at other cases, I realized that a considerable amount of persons being executed in Texas that have remained silent are from Mexico. I have to believe that Mexicans exercising silence in the execution chamber is emblematic or an expression of the oppression faced by Mexicans throughout this country. Mexican immigrants are too often without voice or hope in the United States. Jesus calls us to do better. How can we lift up the voices and hopes of Mexican immigrants?

I invite you to ponder the plight of Mexican immigrants as you experience the lack of last words from Edgar Tamayo:

Silence.

Amen.
