“Do you really believe in God?” She leaned in for my reply. “God just seems like such a silly idea.” When I finally answered, she could hardly believe her ears. “This doesn’t sound like any God I’ve ever heard of.” As the conversation proceeded, I explained. I believe the fundamentalist God is an angry piece of shit. I believe the progressive God is deconstructed piece of shit. I believe the God of the Bible is a false idol. I believe that any God that is easily explained or ignored is not God. “So, what type of God do you believe in?” I believe in the God that is beyond our conceptions. I believe that God is fiction. “You believe that God is fake?” Fiction is not fake. Fiction reveals more truth than that which we claim to be real. Fiction is beyond complete conception. Fiction is alive. Fiction is changing. Fiction is growing. Fiction is divine. We meet God in places of fiction. God meets us in the stories. “So, what type of God do you believe in?” I believe that God is fiction.
